Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași (TUIASI) kicks off a new urban regeneration project aiming to transform the green areas of dorms T5 – T6 and T9 – T10 – T10 in Tudor Vladimirescu Student Campus into the biggest outdoor amphitheatre in Iași. The mission is to have one of the most student civic centres in Europe and all TUIASI students are encouraged to submit courageous and innovative rejuvenation ideas.
The winning team will receive a 1,500-euro prize and will have the opportunity to work with the Campus leadership and Student Services Department during the implementation phase.
“Our University’s policy has always been centred on our students, on their expertise, backed by their youth and ambition, and also on the fact that they always know their needs better than anyone else. This is why we always have projects where we ask students to come up with ideas and concepts, whether it’s modernising urban spaces or completely rehabilitating common spaces and lecture halls. The awards are meant to motivate them, but they are symbolic as well, because the ideas and hard work of those who win the competitions will be then seen in the new and improved image of our University”,

The civic centre must be able to host academic activities such as events, movie nights, outdoor theatre plays, garden parties, workshops, other group recreational activities. Furthermore, the participants are encouraged to propose even more activities that the civic centre will be able to accommodate.
Participating students are advised to start their projects based on things that they would like to have on campus and that could also benefit future generations. The projects should be aesthetically pleasing, but also practical.
“Our goal is, five years later from the passing of Vice-Rector Cezar Oprișan, to finalise one of his campus enrichment ideas: to create a space where students can cheerfully walk and hold their hands. We hope that by the end of the year we’ll have finished the auto barrier project, blocking car access on the street crossing the T9 – T11 and T5 – T6 park. This will be a beautiful place, full of life, with great student soirees”,

TUIASI students and alumni can compete individually or in teams, and a person can submit multiple projects. In the case of alumni, they must be part of a team where at least half the members are still TUIASI students. Project application is done online by submitting two forms, found here.
The deadline is 12 June 2023, by the end of the day. Candidates can ask questions and request technical assistance until 9 June. Between 13 – 20 June, they will present their proposals in front of a jury comprised of a professor from the Faculty of Architecture, two Student Services Department employees and a student representative. The winning projects will be announced by 21 June and they will be implemented by 31 October 2023.
Projects will be selected by the following criteria:
- BEAUTIFUL & NOVEL – the originality and ingenuity of organising the space and outfitting it with urban furniture; the creativity of designing the civic centre;
- PRACTICAL – the functionality of the civic centre;
- The cost-effectiveness of the proposed financial investments – the project has a satisfactory cost-effectiveness rapport; the budget is realistically structured;
- The depth of detail presented for the solution (renders, sketches, presentation);
- Project impact – the degree to which the project will bring change in the campus students’ lives; the solution brings significant social, behavioural, environmental, etc. changes on the long-term; the project is based on innovative and eco-friendly materials.
