All the light sources in Tudor Vladimirescu Student Campus were switched to LED and the lighting system was extended by 20%, making TUIASI campus the first in the country to be fully LED illuminated. The project required a 40,000 Euro investment and will save an estimated of 15,000 kWh yearly.
Before this modernisation process, the campus streets were illuminated with sodium-vapor gas-discharge lamps bought ten years ago that were worn out due to intense use and weren’t energy-efficient.
The new LED lights are more powerful, boasting a more intense light, and have a 50% better color rendering index than the old lights. The campus lighting system was extended from 91 to 112 lamp posts.
“There were some areas on campus that weren’t illuminated as well as we would have liked. The authorities have also told us that better lighting greatly reduces crime risk. We are also seeing a significant decrease in energy consumption and are now able to illuminate more of the campus surface, in areas most frequented by students,”
said Professor Lidia Gaiginschi, Vice-rector for Student Affairs.
The project was initiated at the request of the Campus Infrastructure Service within the Student Services Direction. The Ministry of Education sent the funds at the end of 2022, and the implementation period was a couple of months.
In the future, the University leadership is planning on switching to LED lighting in every dorm room.
“We are planning on reducing energy consumption even further and when we have the necessary funds we will change the lighting system in the dorms. The new campus lighting system is also more durable, with a guaranteed lifespan of more operating hours. The new lamp posts are strategically tied to other projects done in 2022: T6 – T7 dorms parking lot, that was rebuilt and extended, and the student park in front of T1 – T2 dorms, that was completely renovated,”
said Bogdan Budeanu, Tudor Vladimirescu Student Campus Director.
The money saved using the new lighting system will be used to further improve Tudor Vladimirescu Campus. In January, the study halls on campus were renovated through projects done by students and architectural solution competitions.
